There is no Loch Ness monster and there are no witches, the dark forces have been disproven by the modern world. Threats both real and imaginary have been removed and the greatest threat you likely face is another person in the modern world. well, since some years in the Netherlands people related to the murdered victims are able to speak in court when the murderer stands trial. But often it's very painful for them. Especially when the lawyers tell detail for detail how the victim was murdered or butchered.
But I think it's good that the relatives has a say in what the penalty should be. When the Marxists built the Soviet Union they anticipated it to have no murderers. The contention of progress and reason was that there would be need for murder in the glorious future.
But what actually arose was Ted Bundy. Murder became more prolific. That even if we are better off in the modern world it is better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven. The materialists are wrong as so much of life is about making a name for yourself. We might live in a state of material abundance but the decline of camaraderie presents another danger. A stranger danger when your ancestors scarcely met anybody they didn't know. To feel better about being suspicious of everyone you meet, however silently, in the way that modern society is like a woman or security guard.
